Derek serves as a legal counsel for employers in OSHA/MIOSHA and workplace health and safety
matters. Today, Derek will be sharing on how he assists companies in navigating the MIOSHA appeal
and abatement process; and provide OSHA/MIOSHA regulatory training and guidance towards compliance.

Prior to practicing law, Derek was a professor at Grand Valley State University’s Occupational
Safety
and Health Management program for six years.

Derek also has 13 years of general industry experience as a Safety Manager for a national
transportation carrier, for a plastic resin manufacturing company and a Tier I /Tier II automotive
supplier.

Derek also serves his community as a Trustee for Jamestown Township.

Derek earned his Juris Doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley law School, Western Michigan University in
2013. He received his B.S. degree in OSHM from Grand Valley State University.

Derek and his wife, Peggy, have two children 11 & 13 and make their home in Jamestown.
