In managing worker exposure to harmful substances health & safety professionals identify and evaluate options using a ‘hierarchy of controls’. Engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation (LEV) are frequently employed as a remedy. This presentation is an overview of this engineering control technique. We will look at system components, the LEV design process, key parameters for good contaminant control, the importance of performance testing, and on-going operational & maintenance issues. The presentation will also incorporate a hands-on ventilation testing component using equipment provided by the GVSU Occupational Safety and Health Management Program.
