Job Description
The Senior Specialist – Environment, Health & Safety will serve as the subject-matter expert and lead EHS professional supporting our Viking SupplyNet (VSN) and Viking Fabrication Services (VFS) business units. Currently, VSN-VFS employs over 750 people and operates 35 separate facilities domestically within 23 states. The parent company of these business units is Viking Group, Inc., a global manufacturer and distributor of fire suppression equipment. Viking Group also partners with European-based Minimax-Viking, GmbH.
This primary role within Viking will be to ensure regulatory compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations (at Federal, State, and local levels). The position will be based in the Viking Group corporate office located in Hastings, Michigan.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain and update corporate Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
- Work remotely with regional operations managers and their teams to ensure adequate support is provided to assist individual locations achieve a proactive safety culture that works to create a safer workplace.
- Develop standardized environmental and safety compliance tools that will educate and assist local management teams to better identify and correct safety hazards that potentially lead to incidents and injuries within the workforce.
- Develop and improve EHS training content that can be integrated into the online Viking Learning Management System (current vendor is Cornerstone).
- Participates remotely in weekly Safety Meetings (regional & national operations teams).
- Coordinate the prompt intake of incident and injury reporting at the facility level, and then, supports all incident investigation, near miss reporting, and root cause analysis.
- Assist the corporate EHS Manager with local facility management teams in effectively managing workers compensation claims through the corporate management along with scheduling quarterly meetings.
- Develops industrial hygiene strategy and schedules for fabrication facilities.
- Responsible for reporting and recordkeeping and for Hazardous Wastes, SARA, Stormwater, MSDS, and other required documentation.
- Responsible for coordinating and maintaining records for all EHS programs.
- Oversees that the daily walk-through audits are completed at all locations.
- Ensures monthly/quarterly/annual internal safety audits and recommends appropriate corrective and preventive action are implemented.
- Identifies opportunities to improve safety performance and take proactive measurements to implement new guidelines, policies and SOPs and Work Instructions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Regulatory Compliance (or equivalent from an accredited college or university); plus, 5-10 years related EHS experience.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP/GSP) or PE license preferred; Certified Worker’s Compensation Professional (CWCP) helpful.
- Ability to write complex correspondence, training materials and regulatory compliance reports along with strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Understand complex state, federal and local regulations and letters of interpretation.
- Ability to understand ISO procedures, policies and best management practices.
- Understand air and water laboratory reports; blueprints; diagrams; and maps.
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and reporting methodologies.
- Good observational, organizational and investigative skills.
